Notes

Leviticus 17:11 says, "For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul." Isaiah 53:6 states, "... and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all." And in Isaiah 53:10, "Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin." Jesus, in John 3:14-15 says, "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life." The bronze represented judgement and royalty, and the serpent symbolized sin. Jesus was made sin and foresaken by God, for a "moment." But as in Psalm 22:21, we see "for thou hast heard me," and in Mark 16:6, "he is risen." God has resurrected Jesus - death could not hold him. Corinthians 5:21 says, "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Notes

The sword, representing the sentence of death (and often used in the scriptures as a symbol of divine judgement), is instructed to "smite" (strike) the shepherd. This is representative of the violent death which the Messiah was to experience. 1  This judgement of death was not for any sins on Jesus' part (for He was without sin), but for the sins of the world He was to take upon Himself so that we might have ever lasting life. "Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift" (2 Corinthians 9:15).

"My Shepherd"
As God's anointed and only begotten son, Jesus is uniquely qualified to be God's chosen shepherd and representative to Israel. This is the Good Shepherd rejected by Israel in Zechariah chapter 11.
