Notes

As Isaiah 50:4 states, "...The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary..." Isaiah 61:1 presents Messiah as anointed to "preach good tidings" to "the meek."

The phrase "preach good tidings" is from the Hebrew "basar," meaning "to announce glad news," to "preach, publish, show forth, or bring good tidings."1 This is quite literally the meaning of the "Gospel." The "good tidings" in Isaiah 61:1 is the "good news" of salvation through the belief and personal acceptence of Jesus as one's Lord and savior.

The word "meek" is best understood as "afflicted, distressed, or "needy."2 The Septuagint translated it as "poor." In Matthew 11:28 Jesus says, " Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
