Notes

Near the end of his life, Jacob assembled his twelve sons and blessed them and prophesied about the future of each of them. In Genesis 49:8-12, Jacob, speaking to Judah, says that rulership will come through his descendants. Thus the primary identifiers of the Messianic line were Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah, and then David. Jesus, the ultimate objective and culmination of the Messianic hope, was in this same genealogical line. In Genesis 49:9 Jacob compares Judah to a lion, and in Revelation 5:5 Jesus is called "the Lion of the tribe of Judah."

Notes

The "Branch" is a Messianic title that represented the "shoot" of new life that would grow out of the hewn-down stump of Israel to provide hope and deliverance. For related scripture on the Branch also see: Isaiah 4:2, Jeremiah 23:5 and 33:15, and Zechariah 3:8 and 6:12.

The "stem," or "stump" would appear to be dead, just as the sovereignty of Israel appeared to be when they were under Roman rule at the time of Jesus. But God had an unconditional covenant with Abraham, and he would fulfill His promise to bless him and all nations with the coming of the Messiah. The "Branch," a small and tender sprout would be vulnerable, just as Jesus (who as God became a man) was as vulnerable as any other human. But as the stone in Daniel 2:34-35,45 became the mountain that overpowered all kingdoms and filled the whole earth, so Jesus, the "root of Jesse" in Isaiah 11:10 will at His second coming stand as "an ensign" (or "banner") to all people, and His kingdom shall be glorious.

Some have linked Matthew 2:23, "And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene" with Isaiah 11:1. However, nowhere Old Testament in scripture does it say specifically that the Messiah would be from Nazareth. The rational for pointing to Isaiah 11:1 has to do with the word "Branch." The Hebrew for Branch is "netzer." By assonance "netzer" was associated with "Nazarene."1 When Matthew says "that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets" he is apparently applying a literary device (the likeness of sound) to make an application of Old Testament scripture to a New Testament situation. Just as many teachers today take scripture and apply it to current situations, it was not uncommon for rabbis in Jesus' time to do the same. Therefore Matthew 2:23 should be understood to be an "application" of Old Testament scripture, and not a literal prophecy.

Notes

The phrase "house of David" in verse 13 refers to the royal descendants from David, those that would sit on the throne of Israel. Jesus, a descendant of David, will sit on the throne of Israel during his millenial reign at His second coming (see Psalm 2). Verse 14 states that this descendant would be born of a virgin, and be "Immanuel," which means "God with us."

Isaiah 7:13-14 speaks of the sign to the "house of David," that the kingdom of Israel would not be deposed or lose its identity until the virgin birth of the Messiah. 1  Isaiah 7:15-16 speaks of a second sign, a sign to Ahaz (King of Judah) that the two enemies he feared (northern Israel and Syria) would be "laid waste" by the time Isaiah's son Shear-Jashub (see Isaiah 7:3) grew up. 2

Isaiah 9:7 is a continuation of 9:6, the Child that is born, the Son that is given, the Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace shall reign upon the throne of David, and therefore would have to be a descendent of David. This everlasting reign of justice and peace awaits the second coming of Jesus, the rightful heir to the throne of David. This theme of the everlasting kingdom is a progression of the promise initiated to David as recorded in 2 Samuel 7:12-16 and 1 Chronicles 17:10-14.

Notes

Jeremiah 23:1-8 describes the future millienial reign of Jesus as King Messiah. In contrast to the wicked shepherds of Jeremiah's day (Kings Jehoahaz, Jehoiachim, Jehoiachin, and Zedekiah) and those throughout history that have lead the flock of Israel into sin, idolatry, and ultimately captivity, this King will be a good shepherd that rules with wisdom and justice. Whereas Israel's evil rulers have caused its people to be scattered, Jesus says in Matthew 15:24 "... I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel." Verse 4 says "And I will set up shepherds over them which shall feed them..."1   and in John 21:16-17 Jesus speaking to Peter (and all those who become His disciples by accepting Him as Lord) says, "Feed my sheep." The people will be completely regathered to Israel and live safely under the multitude of blessing that the Lord bestows upon them and the land. (Reference a similar description of Jeremiah 23:1-8 in Ezekiel Chapter 34).

Verse 5 describes the royal "Branch" from the line of David,2   He will be the good and righteous King who will rule out of Zion. In Luke 1:32-33 the angel that visited Mary before Jesus was born spoke of Jesus' destiny to reign on the throne of David, "He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end." Messiah is to be descendent of David, a continuation of God's promise that Nathan delivered to David in 2 Samuel 7:12-13. The phrase "... and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth," this will occur upon the second coming of Jesus when His enemies are made a footstool for His feet (Psalm 110:1), and on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS (Revelation 19:16).

Verse 6, "... The Lord our Righteousness," 1) The name "the Lord" speaks to this King's divinity, see Jeremiah 23:6, "The Messiah would be God." 2) The second part of the name".. our Righteousness," in John 10:11 Jesus says, "I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep." By giving His life for us to satisfy the judgement that we owed, we were justified and made righteous before God, "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him" (2 Corinthians 5:21).

1. These good shepherds are typified in post-Babylonian captivity leaders like Zerubbabel, Ezra, Nehemiah, and others but more fully realized in the saints that will rule with Jesus, King Messiah in the age to come.

2. Branch, a Messianic metaphor, literally meaning "shoot" or "sprout," and signifying the new life that Messiah brings to the Davidic monarchy that was presumed dead, and the new life that He brings to all mankind. Isaiah 4:2 speaks of the Branch of the Lord, Isaiah 11:1-5 describes the Spirit-filled Branch, Jeremiah 23:5 and 33:15 presents the Branch, the King from the royal line of David, Zechariah 3:8 outlines God's "Servant," the Branch, and Zechariah 6:12 offers the "Man" who is the Branch. David Baron in his classic book "Rays of Messiah's Glory" states that the Hebrew word translated in English as "Branch" in Jeremiah 23:5 means "son" in its literal and natural sense. He goes on to say that this is the verse most generally quoted by Jews as proof that the Messiah is to be the Son of David.

Notes

The "high cedar" represents the royal line of David (reference 17:11-13, the Lord's explanation of the use of theses symbols in verses 17:3-4). However, this would be the "highest branch" of the high cedar, the Messiah. The word "branch" is a name used in the Old Testament to represent the Messiah (see: Isaiah 4:2, Jeremiah 23:5, 33:14-15, Zechariah 3:8, 6:12-13).

Rich in messianic imagery, Ezekiel 17:22-24 looks primarily toward the future kingdom of Jesus, King Messiah, during the millennial timeframe. The phrase "plant it" amplifies the previous "set it," and speaks to the fulfillment of God's immutable plan - Jesus is Lord over all and will reign as King on God's "high hill," his holy hill - Mount Zion (see Psalm 2:6). God's promise to Abraham is that "... in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed." Jesus is the fulfillment of that promise and is the "tender one," the "tender plant" as in Isaiah 53:2, the "goodly" and "majestic cedar" who is a shelter and blessing to Israel and to all nations. Isaiah 11:10 states "And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious." All nations, "all the trees of the field" shall know Jesus as Lord. Jesus is the root of Jesse, the "low tree" that has been exalted. He is the "dry tree," the "root out of dry ground" (Isaiah 53:2) that flourishes and prospers (Isaiah 53:10).
