Notes

"Awake, O sword"
The sleeping sword, representing an instrument of death that had been destined for a specific purpose since before the creation of the world, is awoken from its deep and long slumber by a command from God. This represents God's foreordained plan that Jesus would be put to death as a substitutionary payment for the sins of mankind. David Baron expounds, "The slaying of the Messiah, therefore, which, in chapter 12:10-14, is viewed as being the act of the Jewish nation, of which they shall repent with such deep and godly sorrow, is in the passage now before us described as an act of God. 'Awake, O sword, against My shepherd, and against the man that is My Fellow.'" 1  Jesus' crucifixion was a willful, sinful act that represented the depravity of all mankind, but nonetheless it was in full and complete accordance with God's predestined plan of salvation for the world. 1 Corinthians 2:7-8, "But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory." Jesus, "the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world" (Revelation 13:8). Also see Isaiah 53:6, 10.
