The word the King James Version translates as "judgement" is from the Hebrew "mishpat," which can mean a "verdict" (favorable or unfavorable), or "pronounced judicially" (formal decree, divine law, statute, or ordinance), or "justice" (a right or privilege).1 Most translations (NAS, NKJV, NIV) render "mishpat" as "justice." As used in Isaiah 42:1, "mishpat" most likely refers to "the gospel dispensation, founded on justice."2 The gospel that Jesus preached had a judicial effect, providing for everlasting life to those to accepted it, and eternal damnation to those who rejected it. The phrase "he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles" in Isaiah 42:1 can be understood to refer to the gospel as the "true religion" that Jesus instituted unto all nations during His first earthly ministry.3 That the Messiah would provide salvation to the Gentiles is further supported later in this same passage, see Isaiah 42:6. Some also interpret "justice" in this verse to refer to the administration of the future reign of Jesus as King Messiah at His second coming.
