Just as Isaiah 11:1 states that Messiah would be a "rod out of the stem of Jesse," who was a probably a farmer or shepherd and not "royalty" as his son David would become, so here the phrase "a root out of a dry ground" speaks to the fact that by the time Messiah would be born, the royal line of David would be reduced to poor, unknown, and common people. See notes on Isaiah 11:1b, "The Messiah would grow up in a poor family." The phrase "a root out of a dry ground" has also been connected with the idea that at the time of Messiah, the state of Israel would no longer be sovereign and prosperous, but would be enslaved, demeaned, and humbled.1 Such was the case when Jesus was born, with Israel being subject to authoritarian and oppressive Roman rulership. Franz Delitzsch associates the phrase "a root out of a dry ground" as "the miserable character of the external circumstances in the midst of which the birth and the growth of the servant had taken place."1 Finally, the phrase "as a root out of a dry ground" has sometimes been associated with the fact the Jesus grew up in Nazareth, a place not known for producing anything significant. This association is probably best understood to be an application of Old Testament scripture, and not a literal prophecy regarding the place of Nazareth. 1.
