The highest ruling body and court of justice of the Jews in Jesus' time were the Sanhedrin. The Sanhedrin included the Sadducees, sometimes referred to as "chief priests" and "elders," and the Pharisees, referred to as "scribes." These groups were both religious and political parties. The Sanhedrin were sometimes referred to as "rulers" as in Luke 24:20. Caiaphas and Annas were high priests of the Sanhedrin. Since the office of high priest was for life, many Jews still recognized Annas as the "official" high priest, even though the his son-in-law Caiaphas had been appointed to that position by the Romans. The Pharisees had significant influence and authority, as shown in John 7:45-49 and John 12:42. The Heriodians were Jews of high stature and authority who had allegiance to Greek customs and Romans law. The word "kings" from the Hebrew "melek" which means "king," can also refer to officials of many different levels. Like much of Psalm 2, this prophecy has multiple fulfillment - in Jesus' first coming, as well as his second. | |
